Energy and Food for Development in Refugee Camps and Informal Settlements.

Natural disasters, population growth, social conflicts, political and structural crises determine forced population movements. In this framework, insufficient food availability, malnutrition and poor health conditions increase mortality rates and create a status of protracted crisis. Humanitarian aid deals, above all, with food security; hence, the availability of reliable and sustainable energy technologies is mandatory to give access to basic services, such as cooking, in an effective and efficient way. To achieve this goal, the selection of appropriate energy technologies is indeed pivotal. NGOs’ staff operating in emergencies often make decisions under pressure, with a limited background and adequate competences on energy issues. The event is organized within the activities of the “Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Utilisation” (SET4food) project, funded by the European Commission (the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department - ECHO) and run by COOPI, Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Politecnico di Milano. “Set4Food” has taken into account the combination of food utilization and energy availability in temporary, quasi permanent, and permanent camps and informal settlements. Pilot projects and case studies tested in Libano, Central African Republic, Somalia and Haiti will also be discussed and presented. A whole day to involve associations, NGOs, corporate, foundations and practitioners as well as an opportunity to educate and sensitize the general public reaching Milan during the Expo to appropriate energy solutions for cooking and storing food.
